Welcome to War Dreams, home of the traumatised
minds of aging soldiers, where delusional visions, dreams and hallucinations
comfort those caught in the silent time-warp of conflict. Denial
and surrealism exist here in the darkest of visionary art and troubled
souls. For more info on this collection, see Artist
Commentary below.

Artist's Commentary My interest in the war first emerged
in my early childhood, when my grandmother would happily indulge
my curiosities with stories of a time when food was scarce and
appreciation was plentiful. In the midst of the conflicts between
nations, I believe a certain calmness and often deluded state
of innocence was born in the mindset of soldiers, in order to
cope with the horrors they saw and experienced. It is in this
hallucinogenic state, this space where memory is merged with fantasy
that I hoped to examine in my works.
My work is what could be described as 'a visual set of varying
mindsets and emotions.' I aim to capture a stillness in time,
a surreal limbo where bombs are transformed into hot air balloons
and the sexuality of soldiers' desires are merged with the darkening
skies of their fears. These are thoughts of home, of the loves
they left behindand a visual testimony of their returning to an
age of innocence which flakes and decays like the erosion of their
sanity. I believe that through dreaming the mind seeks to balance
out the emotions and experiences the soul deals with on the physical,
in the attempt to regain balance.
I wanted to explore the ideology that the mind gives us images
to comfort, encourage and motivate the physical vehicle in order
to become disconnected from our human perceived limitations. It
is my intention to leave the viewer to ponder whether these fantasies
are taking place in the soldiers' minds in the thick of battle,
or years later as old men, seeking a warped normality and purity
in an ever-changing and hostile world.
